Gay Newcastle

Gay Newcastle is almost a contradictio in terminis. Newcastle has one (1) LGBT party venue: The Gateway Hotel. I went there on Saturday.

Let’s face it, it’s not spectacular. The G is divided in different areas.

  • The Pub includes pool tables and a karaoke.
  • The Bistro serves food during the day.
  • The slot machine area for people who get bored. This quite peculiar.
  • The club, with the actual dance floor. Mixing tracks is quite unheard of.

It was a regular to slow night. It wasn’t very crowded. The crowd by the way is very mixed with all letters of the LGBT acronym.

I’m told The G is not uncontroversial with the local gays. First of all it’s not a great place, secondly going there is not without risk and thirdly why bother?

Many Newcastle gays can go to Sydney (three hours by train) or go out to mainstream places. They’ll find potential boyfriends or sex dates online.

Although it wasn’t the best party night of my life, I was glad to experience gay going out in a provincial town.

Fortunately UNITY nightclub opened on the 8th June 2012 in Newcastle which is pro-actively serving the local community as a “nightclub” as well as a bar throughout the day in the Sydney Junction Hotel. UNITY is about entertainment and attracting GLBTQI population to Newcastle with a lineup of acts and big names imported from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and internationally to entertain the crowds. The focus of the venue staff is on customer service and safety.
