Grindr: barometer for homophobia

As I pointed out earlier not everything is in Australia as gay as in Dorothy’s Oz. On my tour, I found Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney to be gay friendly. Maybe Brisbane too. Outside these ‘gay islands’, it’s a different story.

I wasn’t gaybashed at all. I didn’t get nasty comments. Perhaps some looks. But you have this everywhere. But what I did experience, is how gays behave on iPhone’s gay cruising app Grindr. This gives you an idea how homophobic an area is.

When I browsed Grindr in search of nice guys – read that as you please – I noticed how many guys put “be discreet” on their tag line or personal information. I barely saw that in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. But in Alice Springs, Brisbane, Townsville and Newcastle it was very striking how these guys were afraid to be outed. Yet they go online to find other gays. Maybe I should use the scientific term: men who have sex with men (MSM), as “gay” is associated with a lifestyle. They probably have a girlfriend waiting home.
